Balancing Your Marriage, Family, and Career

Moving Past The Struggle

It's harder than ever to find a balance that helps you spend time with your spouse and family.

On average, we work and have more obligations and distractions than ever before.  Not only do people spend a lot of time at work (see table), but they also spend more time working at home than ever before.

With technology keeping us connected, the average working adult is still likely to check and respond to work emails at home.

This means that overall, less time to spend with your spouse, family, and friends. If we are not careful, work can completely dominate our lives.

Making a Change

All working adults are in this delicate situation. If we focus too much on work, other parts of our live can easily take a back seat. Making a change to reclaim your life from work and distractions can be done in steps.

  1. Guard Your Time
  2. Limit Distractions
  3. Prioritize
  4. Improve communication

We will take a short look at each of these steps now and will take a more in depth look in future posts.

Guard and Limit

Your time is valuable. With so many distractions to eat away at our time, it is a wonder we can get anything done.

Phone games, social media, email, T.V., etc... are always levying for our attention. Protecting your time you spend with your spouse and family and not allowing these invaders to take hold of those potentially precious moments is important.

Limiting your distractions is a way of protecting your time by not even giving distraction a chance.

This can be leaving your phone in another room (or silencing it), recording the t.v. show for later, or even setting aside a time specifically for distractions.

Taking a proactive approach is much easier than trying to ignore a text you get in the moment.

Prioritize and Communicate

Where we spend our time is what indicates our priority. I can not claim my spouse is a high priority if I do not spend much time with them.

When you are busy, it is even more important for you to make time for the people and activities we love to do. How much time would you get back by spending less time on your phone or in front of the T.V.?

Communicate with your spouse and family. This is one of the most important steps because if you have only a limited amount of time to spend with those you love then you want that time to be awesome.

When communication sucks, it is likely that the time you spend with those you love is hit or miss on if it is pleasurable.  Improving communication helps bridge that gap to make the most of the time you spend together!
