Services and Pricing for Counseling

Life Care Counseling services focus on long-term mental and social health. A counselor is different than other medical professionals in that you often see them more often and longer. This is because counseling seeks to heal injuries that cannot always be seen and have often been building up over time.

Do We Take Insurance?

I would love to say that we do take insurance but we do not accept insurance plans at this time. Unfortunately, the way insurance claims are handled adds time and creates conflicts of interests on the part of the clinician. The mental health community has documented barriers that providers face when seeking payment, and several lawsuits demonstrate these issues. Ethical and legal concerns, along with the lack of control that can come with accepting insurance, are why we do not accept any insurance.

We do provide "superbills," which can be submitted to your insurance and applied to your appropriate benefits. Most insurers allow this but you would need to check with your specific insurance to see if they take "superbills" for out-of-network payment and how they process them. If we do provide a superbill, we will need to provide a mental health diagnosis for the document.

What makes counseling with Life Care Counseling worth the cost?

Focus is the biggest reason you should consider working with us. A quick search shows that 9 out of 10 mental health professionals have been burnt out. A clinician that is burnt out is overworked and has lower performance. We have systems in place to stop this and it starts with our fee.

We only take on a smaller caseload. While other therapists take 22-30 clients, we see fewer than 20 a week. This helps us have more focus and energy for those sessions.

Why is burnout happening for so many counselors?

This is the same as any other professional field. There has been a surge in the need for mental health services and counselors have generally started to work more to compensate. If counselors work with insurance, they often get reimbursed at low rates that cause the need to take on more clients to earn a livable wage.

Clinicians who accept private pay only often see fewer clients to manage burnout and allow more time for training and skill development. This also allows more time for self-care, which helps counselors perform better in session. Just like a well-rested athlete competes better, so too does a counselor that has a smaller caseload.
